More about

Ashbury College

"Honesty, Courage, Kindness—Probitas, Virtus, Comitas."

Ashbury College is a leading independent day and boarding school located in Ottawa, Ontario, known for its commitment to academic excellence, leadership development, and global engagement. Founded in 1891 by George Penrose Woollcombe, an Oxford University graduate, the school originally started as a small boys’ school in downtown Ottawa. It was named after Woollcombe’s English home and quickly outgrew its early locations. In 1910, the school moved to its current 13-acre campus in the picturesque Rockcliffe Park neighbourhood, where it has continued to expand and evolve ever since.

Woollcombe, who served as Ashbury’s first headmaster for 42 years, established a foundation of academic rigor and character development that continues to guide the school today. His vision of producing well-rounded individuals prepared for leadership roles in society has remained central to Ashbury’s mission, and the school’s commitment to both academic and personal growth has been a hallmark of its educational approach.

Growth and Co-Education

Over the years, Ashbury has grown and adapted to meet the changing needs of its students and the wider educational landscape. In 1972, new additions to the school helped accommodate more than 300 students. A major milestone occurred in 1982 when Ashbury transitioned from being a boys-only institution to a fully co-educational school by enrolling girls in its senior school for the first time. This move helped the school become more diverse and provided new opportunities for leadership and academic success across genders.

The school has continued to invest in its infrastructure to support its growing student body and programs. In 1985, a new gymnasium was added, followed by the construction of the Napier Wing in 1994 to house the Junior School. That same year, several other key facilities were built, including the Ashbury theatre, computer labs, and special-purpose classrooms, reflecting Ashbury’s commitment to providing a modern, holistic education.

A Thriving Boarding Program

Ashbury has a strong boarding program, welcoming students from around the world. The Heather Gillin Residence for girls opened in 1999, further enhancing the boarding experience. In 2004, additional facilities, including Maclaren Hall, a double gymnasium, and new classrooms, were introduced. The boys’ residence was completed in 2009, making Ashbury a premier destination for boarding students in Canada.

The school’s continued expansion reflects its commitment to staying at the forefront of education. In 2014, a new Creative Learning Centre was added, providing bright and inspiring spaces for art and music education. The Maple boutique residence, which opened in 2016, offers a modern and comfortable home for boarders.

Academic Excellence

Ashbury College is known for its rigorous academic programs, which include the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These programs challenge students to think critically, develop research skills, and engage with a global perspective. Small class sizes ensure that students receive personalized attention from teachers, allowing them to thrive academically and grow as individuals.

The school’s faculty are dedicated to creating an enriching academic environment, with many teachers holding advanced degrees in their fields. Beyond academics, students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including athletics, arts, and service learning, all of which contribute to their personal growth and development.
