More about

Emma Willard School

Welcome!

At Emma, our students learn that there is enormous potential and power in being a girl. In our classrooms, on our athletic courts, within science labs, and on stage, life-long lessons are learned in daring to participate, lead, and explore.

Create Your Future

At Emma, girls excel and their ambitions are as varied as their talents. Both in and out of the classroom, we encourage the aspirations of each girl through an innovative, rigorous curriculum that meets the needs of the individual learner. We explore values and reward intellectual risk taking. From individualized study offered through Practicum, to living our core values of meaningful choice and ethical decision making as a fair trade institution, we challenge our girls to take responsibility for developing their minds and hearts to the fullest and putting their talents to good purpose.

Discover the “You” You Want To Be

At Emma, we encourage you to explore your ideas and passions through personalized, independent study. With both our Practicum and Signature programs mentors, faculty advisors, coaches, peers, alumnae, and others will guide and support you through an internship or life experience that enables you to gain real-world, hands-on experience in an industry, subject, or sport of your interest. Go well beyond A.P. classes by truly diving into a topic of interest to you.

Athletics & Physical Education

Whether she plays on an interscholastic team or maintains her personal fitness through organized exercise, every girl here benefits from a rigorous program of sports, aquatics, fitness, health and wellness. Designed to provide opportunities for students to develop healthy lifelong habits, exercise is as much a part of her education as are her classes.

Facilities

The Emma community has access to excellent facilities on and off campus for recreation, fitness, and team training.

Charles S. Mott Gymnasium

With two full sized courts, this multipurpose floor is home to our Jester volleyball and basketball teams. The gym is also open to students for intramural use and afterschool activities.

Jester Fitness Center

The fitness center offers a weight room with a comprehensive range of cardio equipment, fitness equipment, free weights, and open space for a great workout for students and faculty. Flexible hours provide students and faculty with many different opportunities to fit in a workout in their busy schedules.

Fitness studio

Next to the fitness center there is a multi-purpose floor with a surround sound system that is a perfect place for our teams to train or for our afterschool Zumba classes.

Helen S. Cheel Aquatic Center

Cheel Aquatic Center is one of the finest swimming and diving facilities in the capital region with a six-lane competition pool and a one-meter diving board. Home to the Emma Willard varsity swimming and diving team, Cheel Aquatic center is also open to the local community to rent, is a lifeguard-training site for Emma students and faculty, and is open to students and employees during recreational swim hours.

Athletic Fields

The outdoor sports facilities include grass fields for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey, a softball field, and recreational fields for PE classes.

Robison Track

The state-of-the-art 6 lane track is the perfect place to host home meets. The track and field venue also includes separate runways for jumping and space for discuss and shot put events.

Outdoor Tennis Courts

Home to our varsity tennis team, the 8 courts provide a great place for our tennis team to train and compete. The courts are also available for students and faculty to use for recreational use and the public is able to rent court time at certain times of the year.

Emma Willard Boathouse

Emma Willard¹s private boathouse was constructed in the fall and winter of 2006 and first used during the 2007 spring season. The boathouse is located at the far north end of Green Island, approximately 5 miles from campus. We house (3) Eights, (1) Four/Quad, (2) Doubles, in addition to racing and recreational singles. We have a state of the art docking facility and have the ability to row on both the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, virtually guaranteeing suitable conditions for practices and miles of unobstructed open water. Our 1500-meter racecourse is straight, deep, wide, and very spectator friendly as the finish line is located at the 112th Street Bridge in North Troy.

Multi Purpose Trails

The wooded trails on campus are a perfect fit for our cross-country team to train or for the Emma community to use throughout the year. The natural escape is a great place to take a break from busy campus life and go for a walk or run and in the winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing fill the trails.
